Former Michigan Tech head football coach and athletic director Ted Kearly has died. Kearly excelled as an athlete at Alpena High School, and then at Michigan State. He joined the MTU football coaching staff in 1967 as offensive coordinator, and took over as head coach in 1969. In four seasons at the helm, his teams compiled a record of 29-7. Following the 1972 season, he took over as athletic director, and served in that role for 17 years. The obituary released by the family indicated that Kearly passed away from complications of Parkinson’s on June 8th in Las Vegas. He was 93.
Kearly’s son, Tom, was MTU’s head football coach from 2005 to 2016. Kearly Stadium on the Tech campus bears the family name.
MLB
The Orioles scored seven runs in the eighth inning to secure a 10-1 victory over the Tigers last evening. Casey Mize pitched into the sixth, gave up just two runs, but took the loss. Baltimore’s late explosion came off Brenan Hanifee and Beau Brieske.
The Tigers wrap up that set in Baltimore tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Dean Kremer. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit will finish the season without talented young starter Jackson Jobe, and will likely open next season without him, as well. Jobe left a game on May 28th with a sore elbow. He’ll need Tommy John ligament reconstruction surgery. Rehab typically takes 12-18 months.
Chad Patrick struggled, as the Brewers fell to the Braves 6-2 yesterday. Patrick struck out eight over five innings, but also gave up all five Atlanta runs on seven hits. Rhys Hoskins homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers host the Cardinals this evening. Highly touted rookie Jacob Misiorowski will make his major league debut against Sonny Gray.
