Summer will come to the Keweenaw Peninsula. But while the sun waits to warm up the temperatures, the Copper Scoop has been hard at work churning delicious creamery creations. The ice cream shop, owned by Nathan and Jean Mcparlan , opened last night for the first day of the summer season. Nathan says he tries to find a way to connect his ice cream to the local area, most often through the flavors he creates.
We use as many local ingredients as possible. During the Thimbleberry season, we’ll get local thimbleberries and make thimbleberry ice cream. That one goes very fast. During strawberry season, we buy local strawberries. When the blueberry harvest happens in August, we’ll make blueberry ice cream that sells pretty well. – Nathan Mcparlan , Owner, of The Copper Scoop
Throughout the summer Mcparlan makes regular trips to Chassell and visit local berry farmers. The Copper Scoop even makes a maple walnut ice cream that uses Upper Peninsula maple syrup. Mcparlan says it’s exciting to start the summer season in Calumet. Additionally, it’s been great to see other businesses join the community and help make the village a special stop on any day.
