Recently, Gogebic Community College shared how a $5,000 grant has supported three student-led projects on campus.
The first project supported by the Xcel Energy Grant enabled students to test hemp samples using a gas chromatograph, laying the groundwork for further collaboration between the state of Michigan and Northern Michigan University.
A second project led by students studied plant tissue cultures to explore disease-free cloning in tomatoes and industrial hemp plants.
The third project supported by the grant was led by a first-year student. In that project, the student was able to work with microbits and robotics to create a motion-sensing alarm system.
Vice President of Student Services Jennifer Sabourin says hands-on research, flexible structure, and strong mentorships empower students to pursue careers in STEM and connect with local workforces. The Xcel Energy Foundation grant supports student retention in STEM fields by empowering students to lead projects that prepare them for careers in high-demand industries.
