Next week the Hancock Community Hub hosts its first concert inside the structure’s auditorium. Formerly the site of Hancock High School and then used for classes by Finlandia University, the Hancock community hub reinvigorates the community’s central spot. Right start-up secretary Sara Lahti says the group recently completed some of the space’s revitalization work, just in time for the University of Michigan jazz ensemble to visit.
Last week to get ready for this concert, we had to clean the stains that were on the valances, like the front curtains on the stage. So we had to get contractors in here actually, because it’s such a big stage and it’s hooked up behind the arch. And that was an early project, little things you don’t think about. Like how are you going to clean the stage curtains? We are also working with somebody right now to make some curtains for the side windows so that we can have a bit of a theatrical environment when people want to put on productions. – Sara Lahti, Secretary, Right Start UP Board of Directors
The University of Michigan Jazz ensemble travels to Hancock as a part of the band’s tour to Marquette and Ironwood. The concert will raise further funds to support the auditorium’s revitalization. Before the band takes the stage, Lahti says some students will host a small Jazz Clinic. Tickets for the concert on the evening of May 6th cost 10 dollars find more information here.
